In this section I will present the representation of verb semantics which I will assume in the remainder of this thesis. It is based on Davis' (1995) architecture for lexical semantics, but is expanded to accommodate the extensions proposed in the previous section and to provide the basis for interaction of this lexical semantics with the semantics of sentence modifiers. I will outline precisely how the representation presented integrates into the standard HPSG lexical entries for verbs (see Section 2.3.1), and give examples of that integration. In the following discussion, I will assume basic familiarity with HPSG as described in pollard_sag:94.
